Rooted in Faith, Reflecting Christ’s Love for Over 250 Years
As a church family, we strive to uphold Biblical truth in practical and caring ways. We believe that healthy relationships are the key to a meaningful Christian life, both with Jesus Christ and with one another. Second Baptist has been a church in the community for over 250 years, and desire to continue to reflect the heart of our Savior for many more.
Our History
The Second Baptist Church of N. Stonington was organized in 1765, with Elder Simeon Brown as pastor. (Alice Brown Morgan, our organist for over 50 years, is a direct descendant of Elder Brown and her great grandmother Sarah Brown Allen, who was also the church organist around the turn of the last century.) Elder Brown was born in Stonington on January 31, 1723, and was converted under the preaching of Whitefield in 1745 and united with Rev. Stephen Babcock in forming the Baptist Church in Westerly, RI in 1750. He was baptized by Rev. Wait Palmer in 1764, and was ordained the same year. His pastorate and watchful care over this church extended fifty years and eight months until his death in 1815, a noble record to be engraved on his monument in Brown Cemetery in his native town.
Elder Asher Miner succeeded Elder Brown in 1815. Rev. Miner was born in N. Stonington on January 30, 1772, and was ordained in 1805 as associate pastor. At Elder Brown’s death, he became sole pastor. The church has been, and is still, called the “Miner Church”, although many living at this distant day believe it should have been called the Elder Simeon Brown Church.
Neither Elder Brown nor Elder Miner had the advantages of a collegiate or theological education, but both had natural endowments and a good understanding of the word of God. Their highest aim and the crowning efforts of their lives were to lead men and women, old and young, to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Elder Miner had been trained by his illustrious predecessor, and had spent his whole life with this church. Elder Brown had laid the sure foundation and was worthy to be followed. There were yet living, in 1905, some who remember this saint of God, the tone of his voice, and the people who came in large numbers to attend divine worship.
During his pastorate, nearly five hundred entered into the fellowship of this church. Despite much nearer churches at the time in Westerly, Stonington, and Mystic, people flocked to this old church in great numbers so that during this pastorate the church numbered, at one time, four hundred and eighty. After thirty-one years of service, Elder Miner died September 1, 1836, and the people still worshiped in the old house.
Early Pastors of the church were Rev. Simeon Brown, Deacon Thomas Miner and Rev. Asher Miner. It was commonly known as “The Miner Meeting House” for many years due to the consecration of Rev. Asher Miner. Early records show that the church was built by the brethren (using lumber taken from Elder Brown’s cedar swamp) and stood for 80 years. According to the records, there were seventy-four men who worked to take down the old structure, which was larger than the new church that was being built, and was finished in January 1845. In the ceiling of the front porch can be seen some of the paneling, which is the only part left of the original building.
Although the church was organized in 1765, it was officially incorporated and the name was changed from “The Miner Meeting House” to “Second Baptist Church” in 1917.
What We Believe
I. THE SCRIPTURES:
We believe the absolute authority and accuracy of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments; its verbal inspiration and in-errancy in the original manuscripts and its all-sufficiency as the Christian's rule of faith and practice (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:19-21).
II. THE GODHEAD:
We believe that there is but one God, the Creator, Preserver and Ruler of all things, Who is perfect in holiness, and in love, infinite in wisdom and measureless in power, and Who reveals Himself to us in three distinct Persons, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Deut. 6:4, Neh. 9:6; I Chron. 29:11-12; Ex. 15:11; 1 John 4:8b; Matt. 28:19).
III. THE LORD JESUS CHRIST:
We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal and only begotten Son of God, conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, and that He is true God and true man and is the only, and sufficient, mediator between God and man (Matt. 1:20; Luke 1:45; John 1:1-2, 14; 12:45; 14:9; i Tim. 2:5).
IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT:
We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, Whose ministry is to convict the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment, to regenerate the unbelieving, and to seal, sanctify, teach, comfort and spiritually gift, as He wills, those who believe in Jesus Christ (Matt. 28:19; John 16:8-11; 3:3, 7; 14:26; Eph. 1:13; I Cor. 12:1-31).
V. SALVATION:
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ Died for our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice; that all who believe on Him as justified on the basis of His shed blood (I Cor. 15:3-4; Rev. 1:5). We believe that salvation is by grace through faith, not as a result of works, and that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit, thereby becoming children of God (Eph. 2:8-9; John 3:3, 7; 1:12). We believe that those who truly believe in Christ and are born of the Spirit shall never be lost and have the fullest assurance that those who die in the Lord shall rise again and forever be with the Lord (John 6:39; 10:28-29; Phil. 1:6; I Thess. 4:13-18). We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting conscious blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting conscious punishment of the lost (I Cor. 15:20, 24; Rev. 20:12-15; 2 Cor. 5:8).

Second Baptist Church is a sovereign democratic Baptist church subject to the controls of no other ecclesiastical body. The Church depends on the active participation of the congregation in its decisions and government. We are conservative in doctrine, evangelical in beliefs, evangelistic in spirit and committed to preaching and teaching the Word of God. We desire to participate in fellowship and ministry with other assemblies and organizations of like faith in the common goal to fulfill the Great Commission.
Article IV: DOCTRINAL BELIEFS
1. THE HOLY TRINITY:
We believe that there is but one God, the Creator, Preserver and Ruler of all things, Who is perfect in holiness, and in love, infinite in wisdom and measureless in power, and Who reveals Himself to us in three distinct Persons, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Deut. 6:4; Neh. 9:6; 1 Chron. 29:11-12; Ex. 15:11; 1 Jn. 4:8b; Matt. 28:19).
-
GOD THE FATHER: God, as Father, reigns over all of His universe with providential care. He is all-powerful, all-loving, all-knowing and all-wise. He is fatherly in attitude toward all men, but is Father, indeed, to those who have become children of God through Jesus Christ, who will deliver them into the Father's hands (Gen. 1:1; 1 Chron. 29:10; Jer. 10:10; Matt. 6:9; Acts 1:7; Rom. 8:14-15; 1 Cor. 8:6; 1 Cor. 15:24; Eph. 4:6).
-
THE LORD JESUS CHRIST: We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal and only begotten Son of God, conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, and that He is true God and true man and is the only, and sufficient, mediator between God and man (Matt. 1:20; Lk. 1:45; Jn. 1:1-2, 14; 12:45; 14:9; 1Tim. 2:5).
-
THE HOLY SPIRIT: We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, Whose ministry is to convict the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment, to regenerate the unbelieving, and to seal, sanctify, teach, comfort and spiritually gift, as He wills, those who believe in Jesus Christ (Matt. 28:19; Jn. 16:8-11; 3:3, 7; 14:26; Eph. 1:13; 1 Cor. 12:1-31).
2. THE SCRIPTURES:
We believe in the absolute authority and accuracy of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments; its verbal inspiration and truth in the original manuscripts and its all-sufficiency as the Christian's rule of faith and practice (2 Tim. 3:16, 17; 2 Pet. 1:19-21).
3. MAN - CREATION AND FALL:
We believe that man was specifically created by God in His own image and could not therefore be the product of evolutionary process via natural selection; that man sinned and thereby incurred both physical and spiritual death; thus we believe that all men, by nature and choice, and apart from Christ, shall be forever separated from God to a place of everlasting torment (Gen. 1:26-27; 2:7, 18-24; Ez. 18-20a; Rom. 3:23, 6:23; Matt. 25:41).
4. SALVATION:
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice; that all who believe on Him are justified on the basis of His shed blood (1 Cor. 15:3-4; Rev. 1:5).
We believe that salvation is by grace through faith, not as a result of works, and that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit, thereby becoming children of God (Eph. 2:8-9; Jn. 3:3,7; 1:12).
We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord for our justification, in His ascension into Heaven, and in His present ministry there for us as High Priest and Advocate (Rom. 4:25; 1 Cor. 15:3-4; Acts 1:8-11; Heb. 4:14-16; 1 Jn. 2:1-2)
We believe in Eternal Security, that those who believe in Christ and are born of the Spirit shall never be lost and have the fullest assurance that those who die in the Lord shall rise again and forever be with the Lord (Jn. 6:39; 10:28-29; Phil. 1:6; 1 Thess. 4:13-18).
We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting conscious blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting conscious punishment of the lost (1 Cor. 15:20, 24; Rev. 20:12-15; 2 Cor. 5:8).
5. SATAN:
We believe in the existence of the devil, the chief enemy of the Holy Trinity and our souls, who although presently ruling this world, has already been defeated by Christ's atoning death and resurrection (Gen. 3:1-4; Ez. 28:13-19; Jn. 8:44; 2 Cor. 4:4; 11:14-15; Eph. 2:2; 6:11-12; Rev. 12:9; 20:2).
6. FUTURE THINGS:
We believe that our Lord shall return in accordance with (1 Thess. 4:13-18), at which time the saints both dead and living shall be caught up to meet Him in the air, so shall we ever be with Him; that the unregenerate shall remain on earth for approximately seven years of judgment, (The Great Tribulation: Rev 6-7) culminated by our Lord's return to earth to establish His Millennial Kingdom (Jn. 14:1-3; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 5:9; Dan. 9:24-27; Rev. 6:17; Matt. 25:31; Rev. 19:11-16; 20:1-6).
7. THE ORDINANCES:
We believe in the observance of the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper in obedience to the commands of Jesus Christ. Baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Lord's Supper, including the elements of both bread and cup, was instituted by Christ as a memorial of His death "till He come". These two ordinances have been committed to the local Church to be observed until Christ comes for His Church. They are not, however, to be regarded as a means of salvation and therefore have no effect on one’s salvation if not observed (Acts 2:38-47; Eph.5:2; Matt. 28:19-20; Acts 8:36-39; Rom. 6:3-4; 1 Cor.11:23-29; Mk. 16:15-16).
8. THE CHURCH:
We believe that the New Testament speaks of the Church as a living organism, called the Body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the Head, and of which all saved people, from all ages, are members (1 Cor. 12:1-31; Eph. 2:22-23; Matt. 16:16-18).
Article V: CHURCH COVENANT
Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.
We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this Church in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its growth, and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the Church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations.
We also engage to maintain family and personal devotion; to educate our children in the Word of His Grace; to seek the salvation of our family, relatives and acquaintances; to walk carefully in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our behavior; to abstain from all appearances of evil, and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the Gospel of our Savior.
We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember each other in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay.
We moreover engage that, when we remove from this place, we will as soon as possible unite with some other Church of like faith where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's Word.
